Poland Explores Creation of Drone Zones to Guard Rail, Energy Sites
Polish State Assets Minister Wojciech Balczun told media on Wednesday that the drones would monitor activity near essential sites and, if necessary, intercept hostile unmanned aircraft.
"If we have drone technology, we should now use this technology to protect our critical infrastructure," he said.
Balczun emphasized that the recent rail disruption has a "big influence on the security decisions" that need to be made.
Last week, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused Russia of orchestrating two suspected sabotage attempts on the railway linking Warsaw to Lublin and onward to Ukraine.
Authorities have arrested three Ukrainians accused of working for Russia in connection with the incidents.
Moscow has denied the allegations. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that "Russophobia is flourishing" in Poland.
Reflecting on the security measures, Balczun noted that deploying drones earlier could have helped prevent the sabotage, adding that the subsequent "reaction of the police and the secret service was absolutely correct."
