Polish Official Criticizes Israeli Embassy for Remarks on Lawmaker Case
Czarzasty argued that foreign diplomatic missions should exercise “greater prudence” when addressing internal political matters in Poland.
“I recommend greater prudence from diplomatic missions that would interfere with the work of Polish politicians,” Czarzasty told reporters.
The tension emerged after the Israeli embassy issued a social media statement calling on Polish officials to respond rapidly to Berkowicz. According to reports, the embassy reacted after the lawmaker displayed an Israeli flag altered with a swastika in parliament last week and accused Israel of “genocide” in Gaza. The embassy’s message also referenced an earlier photograph of the same politician.
In its statement, the embassy said that “there is no place in democratic Poland for antisemitism, hate speech and Holocaust inversion” and urged authorities to take “quick action” through prosecutors and parliamentary channels.
The incident that sparked widespread outrage occurred on 14 April, when Berkowicz displayed a modified Israeli flag in parliament, replacing the Star of David with a Nazi swastika. During his remarks, he referred to Israel as “the new Third Reich.”
