Poland's Defense Minister Pitches Permanent U.S. Military Base to U.S.
"US engagement in Poland's security is not shrinking. On the contrary, it could grow even larger," Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on X. He added that he presented the proposal during talks with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
"A safe Poland means a strong army, a strong society and strong alliances," the Polish defense chief said.
No specifics regarding the proposed facility's location, scale, or operational role have been made public.
The move arrives as NATO allies conduct sweeping reviews of their collective defense posture amid deepening uncertainty over Europe's long-term security architecture. It also coincides with an intensifying debate over the future footprint of American forces on the continent, following reports that Washington is actively reassessing troop deployments across Europe.
Polish officials have worked to project confidence that US defense commitments to Poland remain firmly intact, even as broader conversations around burden-sharing and force realignment continue within the alliance.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz have both publicly insisted in recent weeks that Poland stands among Washington's most vital security partners in Europe. Poland currently hosts approximately 10,000 American troops on a rotational basis, alongside critical military assets including the US Army garrison in Poznan and the Aegis Ashore missile defense installation in Redzikowo.
The concept of a permanent US base in Poland is not new. Under the previous Law and Justice (PiS) government during the first Trump administration, Warsaw floated the idea of a facility informally branded "Fort Trump," going so far as to offer billions of dollars in construction funding. Though the base never materialized, the American military presence in Poland expanded considerably following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The renewed proposal reflects a calculated Warsaw strategy to anchor US security guarantees as firmly as possible within Polish territory. Successive Polish governments have consistently regarded the American military presence as an indispensable deterrent against potential Russian aggression and a reinforcement of NATO's collective defense framework.
Poland has simultaneously launched one of Europe's most ambitious military modernization drives, scaling defense expenditure beyond 4% of GDP with pledges to push it even higher. Warsaw has committed to sweeping arms acquisitions from the United States, including Abrams tanks, HIMARS rocket systems, Apache helicopters, and F-35 fighter jets.
