Navy Engineer Brings Seabee Grit and Fleet-Wide Experience to Joint Base Andrews
Weis' path to the Civil Engineer Corps was anything but conventional. He began his career enlisted in the Navy as an electronics technician before leaving the service to earn his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Wichita State University. After several years as a design engineer, the pull to serve again returned him to uniform. This time as an officer.
"I really wanted to keep the title of engineer, so I pursued a commission as a CEC Officer," Weis said.
Weis later went on to earn a Master of Engineering in Project Management from the University of Maryland.
Since then, he has held leadership positions across the Navy's engineering community, including tours with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion THREE, facilities and acquisition roles at Naval Support Facility Indian Head and Naval Support Facility Dahlgren and service as Public Works Officer in Redzikowo, Poland. That breadth of experience, he said, has shaped how he leads today.
"All the roles I've had before this have helped me develop into the leader I am today and have provided lessons that shape my views and approaches to problem-solving in my current role," Weis said.
A licensed professional engineer and certified cost professional, Weis is also Public Works Level III certified. His advice to junior officers pursuing similar credentials: don't wait. "That was one of the last credentials I got and I wish I had done it sooner," he said.
At JBA, Weis will oversee military construction projects while serving as NAVFAC's representative to the joint base's supported commands, which is the type of work he sees as central to strengthening cross-service collaboration.
A mantra from a senior chief during his battalion days still guides him: "Today I will do what others won't, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can't."
Outside the office, Weis recharges through family camping trips, bike rides and exploring the Washington D.C. area alongside his wife and children.
